What is the Meaning of the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra?

The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is composed of three parts: Om, Tryambakam, and Yajamahe. Om is the primordial sound that represents the supreme reality. Tryambakam means "the three-eyed one", which is a name of Lord Shiva. Yajamahe means "we worship" or "we offer". The rest of the mantra describes the attributes and blessings of Lord Shiva.

The full mantra is as follows:

Om Tryambakam Yajamahe

Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam

Urvarukamiva Bandhanan

Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat

The approximate translation of the mantra is:

We worship the three-eyed one,

Who is fragrant and nourishes all beings.

May he liberate us from death,

And grant us immortality like a ripe cucumber that falls from its stem.

The meaning of the mantra is profound and symbolic. It expresses our surrender and gratitude to Lord Shiva, who is the source of all life and happiness. It also expresses our desire to be free from the cycle of birth and death, and to attain eternal bliss. The analogy of a ripe cucumber signifies that we should detach ourselves from worldly attachments and realize our true nature.

  • Start chanting the mantra with a clear and loud voice. You can use a mala (a string of beads) to count the number of repetitions. You can chant the mantra for 9, 11, 21, 27, 54, or 108 times depending on your time and convenience.

  • While chanting, focus on the meaning and vibration of the mantra. Feel the connection with Lord Shiva and his energy. You can also visualize him in his form as Tryambakam (the three-eyed one) or as a shiva lingam.

  • After chanting, sit quietly for a few minutes and meditate on the mantra. You can also offer some flowers, fruits, or sweets to Lord Shiva as a token of gratitude.

What are the Stories of Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra?

Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra has many stories associated with its origin and power. Some of the popular stories are:

The Story of Rishi Markandeya

This story is mentioned in the Markandeya Purana and the Mahabharata. Rishi Markandeya was the son of Mrikandu and Marudvati, who were devout devotees of Lord Shiva. They prayed to Lord Shiva for a child, and he gave them a choice: they could have a son who would live for only 16 years but would be a great sage, or they could have a son who would live for a long time but would be dull and ignorant. They chose the former option, and named their son Markandeya.

Markandeya grew up to be a brilliant and pious boy, who learned the Vedas and other scriptures from his father. He also learned the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra from his father, and chanted it with devotion. He was unaware of his short lifespan, until one day his parents became very sad and revealed to him the truth. Markandeya was not afraid of death, but he decided to spend his last day in worshipping Lord Shiva.

He went to a Shiva temple and embraced a shiva lingam, and started chanting the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra. When the time came for his death, Lord Yama, the god of death, sent his messengers to take his soul. But they could not approach him, as he was protected by a divine aura. They returned to Lord Yama and informed him of their failure. Lord Yama then decided to go himself and threw his noose around Markandeya and the shiva lingam.

As soon as the noose touched the shiva lingam, Lord Shiva emerged from it in a furious form. He scolded Lord Yama for his arrogance and ignorance, and kicked him with his foot. Lord Yama fell down dead, and the cycle of life and death was disrupted. The other gods were alarmed by this situation, and pleaded with Lord Shiva to revive Lord Yama. Lord Shiva agreed, but on one condition: he granted Markandeya the boon of immortality and eternal youth.

Thus, Markandeya was saved from death by the grace of Lord Shiva and the power of Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra.

The Story of Chandra Dev

This story is mentioned in the Shiva Purana and other texts. Chandra Dev was the moon god, who was very handsome and charming. He married 27 daughters of Daksha Prajapati, who were the nakshatras (constellations). However, he loved only one of them, Rohini, and neglected the others. This angered Daksha, who cursed him to lose his beauty and brightness gradually.

Chandra Dev became very worried by this curse, as he started to fade away day by day. He sought refuge in Lord Brahma, who advised him to worship Lord Shiva with the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra. Chandra Dev followed his advice, and performed a penance for 16 days at Prabhasa Kshetra (Somnath). He chanted the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra with sincerity and devotion.

Lord Shiva was pleased with his worship, and appeared before him. He told him that he could not completely revoke Daksha's curse, as it was justified by his partiality towards Rohini. However, he modified the curse so that Chandra Dev would wax and wane alternately for 15 days each month. He also blessed him with health, prosperity, and happiness.

Thus, Chandra Dev was restored to his glory by the mercy of Lord Shiva and the power of Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra.
